South Putnam Animal Hospital

Meet Our Doctors

Our approach to veterinary care sets us apart from other practices in the area. While we provide top-quality clinical services and feline boarding accommodations in a modern facility, it's how we deliver care to you and your pet that's different. We view bedside manner as an integral component of superior service, and strive to offer plenty of love, cuddles, and warm welcomes during every visit.

Julie Fixman

DVM, DABVP, Medical Director, & Co-Owner

Dr. Julie Fixman earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1998. Dr. Fixman is a compassionate and committed veterinarian, co-owner, and the Medical Director at South Putnam Animal Hospital.

Dr. Fixman became Board Certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Canine and Feline Practice in 2007 after completing additional studies and examinations to achieve board certification. Her areas of professional interest include complex internal medicine conditions, soft-tissue surgery, and ultrasound. Dr. Fixman belongs to a number of professional organizations and is a former president of the Hudson Valley Veterinary Medical Society.

At home, Dr. Fixman's pets include Callie, a Golden Retriever whose favorite toy is a frisbee and loves to hike and swim, Spike, an Abyssinian cat who loves to snuggle and doesn't mind being dressed up in clothes, Tally, an Ocicat who fetches and likes to sit on top of open doors to surprise people, and an ever-changing number of chickens. She has a busy family life outside of the office with her husband, son, and daughter, and when she isn't cheering at volleyball or lacrosse or inside an ice arena being a "hockey mom," she enjoys hiking, cooking, reading, skiing, and gardening.

Rebecca Gill

Associate DVM

Dr. Rebecca Gill is the newest Associate Veterinarian with South Putnam Animal Hospital. Dr. Gill received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology with a minor in Chemistry in 2016 from SUNY Oswego. She then went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2022 from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Gill is Fear Free Certified and was awarded Purdue University’s Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine. Her areas of professional interest include dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and internal medicine.

Growing up around animals of all kinds, Dr. Gill never doubted veterinary medicine was her passion. At a very young age, Dr. Gill aided a sickly Jack Russell that needed her help, and ever since that case she devoted her life to providing excellent quality of medicine and helping reinforce the animal-human bond.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Dr. Gill now resides in Westchester, NY with her two domestic short hair cats, 3-year-old Zazzles and 1-year-old Sir Moo Moo. Outside of work, Dr. Gill enjoys animal and nature photography, cooking and baking, arts and crafts, reading and video games, and of course time with friends and family. Dr. Gill hopes her future consists of working with underprivileged schools to introduce and encourage children to explore science - especially veterinary medicine!

Christina Buchter

DVM

Dr. Christina Buchter graduated from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. After a one-year joint emergency/referral and general practice internship in Florida, she practiced at North Shore Animal League on Long Island for seven years and then at Massachusetts Animal Medical Center in the Boston area for five years. She and her family moved back to New York in 2022 to be closer to family and has been practicing locally until joining South Putnam Animal Hospital in September 2024.

From the age of 10, Dr. Buchter knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. She finds the most rewarding part of general practice to be developing trusting relationships with pets and their owners and working together to optimize patient health. Dr. Buchter’s professional interests include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and wound management.

In her spare time, Dr. Buchter tries to keep up with her busy family: her husband, two young children, and two rescue dogs - Hobbes, a senior Pomeranian, and Bandit, a young, large, mixed-breed dog. She enjoys baking and amateur photography.

Kathi Heiber

DVM

Originally from Cleveland, Dr. Kathi Heiber earned her degree in veterinary medicine from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. Her first few years in practice in Brewster, NY were spent treating companion pets as well as farm animals and horses.

In 1984, Drs. Heiber and Cindy Kosacz founded South Putnam Animal Hospital in its present location in Mahopac, NY. The hospital was built to provide a high standard of veterinary care that they would want for their friends and family to receive for their beloved pets. Providing owners with the best information to make care decisions for their pets has always been the hospital's goal.

When Dr. Heiber is not practicing high-quality animal medicine or doing community service, you may find her riding her Arab Shagya mare, Lily. She also has a Jack Russell mix and two adopted cats. Dr. Heiber enjoys reading, swimming, golfing and spending time with her husband, cooking through the seasons with fresh local produce, exploring new cuisines, and traveling.
